The Icelandic Marine Research Institute has ruled out that the herring that swam ashore in large numbers and died in Kolgrafafjörður fjord in West Iceland last week were killed by infection, from which the fish stock has suffered for some time. The infection has reportedly not progressed. Captain Runólfur Guðmundsson from Grundarfjörður has put forth the theory that a cold current below the surface of the fjord is to blame, reasoning that it may have been so cold that ice crystals formed inside the fish and killed them, Fréttablaðið reports.

Þorsteinn Sigurðsson, manager of the Marine Research Institute's exploitable marine stock division did not dismiss Runólfur's theory but stated that the ocean temperature had been around zero, which the herring are supposed to be able to handle.

Bjarni Sigurbjörnsson, a resident at the farm Eiði by Kolgrafafjörður, said whales and birds have taken advantage of the incident and been feasting on the buffet of nature.

A mysterious virus or natural event has baffled residents of an Angus town, after a number of seabirds were found washed up on their shore.

At least 17 geese and other unidentified birds were found on the coast of Arbroath on Sunday morning, and dog walkers contacted The Courier to air their concerns.

Despite being obscured by dirt and debris, only two of the birds had any visible wounds. Kevin Murray recorded 18 geese and one mallard duck at the breakwater during a walk.

He said he was out for a walk along the Arbroath beach front, below the breakwater beside Pleasureland and the old outdoor pool.

"This could have resulted from a lightning strike," he said. "But could this be something else?"

A supervisor for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed a report had been filed on 17 dead seabirds.

It is understood a team may not be available to clear away any contaminated birds until today, so passers-by have been urged not to interfere with the carcasses.

Asked about a link between the deaths and the storms of recent weeks, DEFRA said storms could result in changes to bird migration and stranding.

"Higher water temperatures are sometimes a factor, as are migrating birds carrying botulism," he added. "However, in the case of botulism it is easier to tell when the birds are in situ in a pond or still water."

A report should be submitted to DEFRA in the instance of finding dead swans, geese or ducks, or groups of more than three wild and garden birds.

While avian flu (H5N1) is spread between poultry and is one of the most feared flu strains, there are many more likely causes of death for anserine visitors.

Newcastle disease (ND) is a highly contagious disease of birds caused by a paramyxo virus.

The disease is a worldwide problem and sporadic outbreaks occur frequently, with the last widespread United Kingdom outbreak among partridges in 2006.

Plenty of fringe news outlets are reporting that an estimated 50 tons of dead fish have washed up on the shores of Okinawa, Japan this week, and while plenty of outlets are guessing that the cause of the mass death is due to everything from a lack of oxygen in the water to low temperatures, there's at least one source claiming that the event was caused by chemicals released from a UFO that crashed in December.

The millions of dead fish are said to be "bleeding from the eyes" and many covered with severe burns. Veteran's Today reported that an "inside source" with the Japanese government is aware of the strange occurrence, and the true cause is a foreign aircraft being sought by the Japanese Navy in a secret mission.

"I can confirm to you the dead fish appearing on Okinawa's coast is a direct result of the UFO crash," said the source. "We have scientists stationed on the JS Kurama, the vessel at sea responsible for bringing the spacecraft up to the surface, and they have informed the Prime Minister they believe a strange substance is oozing from the damaged ship and causing noxious fumes to rise to the surface.

Not only is it killing any surrounding fish in the immediate vicinity but the fumes are making it difficult for the salvage crew aboard the ship to breath. The salvage operation has been halted for several hours due to this new development. The scientists fear a new and very dangerous alien chemical is infiltrating the seas and thus killing sea life."

The crashed UFO was first reported in December, along with a fairly dubious photo of the supposed craft currently being blamed for the fish deaths that have Okinawa residents a bit nervous.

"I would not have believed this had I not seen it with my own two eyes," Tsutomu Irabu, a 57 year old fisherman supposedly told some random blogger . "I've never seen anything like this in my entire life. The rotting smell is quite disorientating."

"I'm afraid to touch one," allegedly said Yamato Endo, an 18 year old student who doesn't appear to exist after extensive googling. "I believe them to have chemicals foreign to our planet. I don't want to get infected."

I should point out that I generally like to link these kinds of stories back to mainstream news reports, seeking out as many multiple sources as possible in a genuine effort to provide the best summary available. In this case, there are literally zero mainstream outlets reporting anything about the crashed spacecraft or dead fish, yet this story is spreading like wildfire in fringe circles. In fact, the image of the dead fish featured in every single one of the stories was actually taken in 2007.

Of course, the many alternative news sources who are reporting this are claiming that there's a hush order handed down from the Japanese government to the mainstream media, because come on.. it's a UFO. Isn't what that the government does with UFO stories?

So was it a rare biological event in the sea that killed the fish? Are there even any dead fish? Is the Japanese government covering up the destructive consequences of an off-course alien craft? Is the mainstream media being scooped by a website called InOtherNewz (with a "z")?

I think it's pretty safe to say that my mind is already made up, but I want to know what you think.

วันนี้ (20 ม.ค.) ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า ที่บริเวณสะพานปลาชายหาดหัวหิน อำเภอหัวหิน จังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ได้เกิดปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติมีหอยขึ้นมาเกยหาดเป็นจำนวนมาก รวมระยะทางประมาณ 1 กิโลเมตร และมีประชาชนเดินทางไปเก็บหอยเพื่อนำไปประกอบอาหารกันอย่างคึกคัก โดยพบว่าห อยบางส่วนได้ขึ้นมาเกยหาด ขณะที่บางส่วนยังคงจมอยู่ในน้ำ ซึ่งหอยเริ่มขึ้นมาเกยหาดตั้งแต่ช่วงเย็นวานนี้ (19 ม.ค.)

จากการสอบถามชาวประมงพื้นบ้านทราบว่า หอยที่มาเกยหาดนี้คือ หอยกะพง ลักษณะสีน้ำตาล มีสองฝา คล้ายหอยแมลงภู่ พบได้ในอ่าวไทย ส่วนใหญ่พบมากบริเวณที่เป็นทะเลโคลน เช่น จังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม สมุทรสาคร และทะเลบ้านแหลม จังหวัดเพชรบุรี คาดว่าเกิดจากอิทธิพลของคลื่นลมแรงในอ่าวไทยในช่วง 2-3 วันที่ผ่าน ที่ซัดเอาหอยขึ้นมาเกยหาด



นายบุญยิ่ง วิชกูล อายุ 75 ปี ชาวบ้านหัวหินกล่าวว่า ปรากฏการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นครั้งนี้เป็นปรากฏการณ์ธรรมชาติที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำในช่วงฤดูลมมรสุม ส่วนใหญ่คลื่นลมจะพัดเอาหอยขนาดเล็กขึ้นมาเกยหาด แต่ปีนี้คลื่นลมแรงมากกว่าปกติ จึงพัดเอาหอยที่มีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นมา โดยหอยกะพงนี้สามารถบริโภคได้ แต่ถ้ามีขนาดเล็กจะนำไปเป็นอาหารสัตว์

“สำหรับครั้งนี้หอยกะพงที่ถูกพัดขึ้นมามีขนาดใหญ่ ชาวบ้านสามารถเก็บหอยที่ยังมีชีวิตไปปรุงเป็นอาหารได้ แต่จะต้องรู้ขั้นตอนในการทำความสะอาด เนื่องจากหอยกะพงมีทราย และมีใยยึดเกาะเป็นกลุ่ม อย่างไรก็ตาม อยากให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องเข้ามาเก็บซากหอยที่ตายแล้วเป็นการด่วน ก่อนที่จะส่งกลิ่นเหม็นทำลายบรรยากาศชายหาดหัวหิน”



น.ส.เตือน ทองคง ชาวบ้านหัวหินที่ทราบข่าวจากเพื่อนบ้าน และมาเก็บหอยด้วยกล่าวว่า วันนี้เป็นวันหยุดงานจึงออกมาเก็บหอยไปทำอาหารกิน เพราะเขาบอกว่ากินได้ ซึ่งตั้งใจว่าเย็นนี้จะนำไปต้ม และผัดใส่ใบโหระพา โดยเลือกเก็บตัวที่ยังไม่ตาย ซึ่งครั้งนี้เป็นครั้งแรกเพราะไม่เคนกินมาก่อน แต่เพื่อนบ้านบอกว่า เหมือนกินหอยแมลงภู่

นายจิตจรูญ ตันติวาลา ประมงจังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ กล่าวว่า หอยกะพง หรือหอยเป๊าะคั่ง เปลือกหอยจะบางมีสีเขียว เปลือกทั้งสองข้างจะถูกประกบกันอยู่ ซึ่งหอยกะพงที่ถูกคลื่นซัดมาเกยชายหาดหัวหิน ที่ชาวบ้านไปเก็บกันอยู่ในขณะนี้ถือว่าไม่เป็นพิษต่อร่างกาย สามารถนำไปประกอบอาหารได้ แต่ส่วนที่ตายแล้วก็ไม่ควรเก็บไป เท่าที่ทราบยังมีหอยอีกหลายชนิด แต่เท่าที่ตรวจสอบเป็นหอยกะพงถึง 90 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ซึ่งหากน้ำทะเลขึ้นก็จะพัดเอาหอยกลับลงไปในทะเล โดยคลื่นลมเริ่มสงบเชื่อว่าอีก 2-3 วันก็จะกลับเข้าสู่ภาวะปกติ

เมื่อเวลา 14.00 น. วันที่ 20 มกราคม นายเฉลิมพล มั่งคั่ง นายอำเภอลาดหลุมแก้ว จ.ปทุมธานี ได้รับแจ้งจากชาวบ้านว่าพบปลาโผล่หัวลอยตัวขึ้นมาจำนวนมากและปลาขนาดเล็กได้ลอยตายเป็นแพให้ไปตรวจสอบด้วย ภายในหมู่บ้านปิ่นเจริญ ม.8 ต.หน้าไม้ อ.ลาดหลุมแก้ว จึงไปตรวจสอบที่เกิดเหตุเป็นบ่อดินขนาดกว่า 100 ไร่ ลึกกว่า 100 เมตรของหมู่บ้านที่ขุดดินนำไปถมพื้นที่อื่น ทำให้เกิดเป็นบ่อน้ำขนาดใหญ่ที่ชาวบ้านในหมู่บ้านนี้ได้ใช้น้ำเป็นหลัก แต่มาวันนี้ปลาในบ่อเกิดอาการโผล่หัวลอยตัวขึ้นมาเสียชีวิตจำนวนมาก



สอบถามนายประศาสน์ ผาสุขี อายุ 48 ปี ซึ่งมีบ้านติดกับบ่อน้ำได้แจ้งว่าปลาเล็กเริ่มตายลอยตัวขึ้นมาส่งกลิ่นเน่าเหม็นแล้วเมื่อวันที่ 19 ม.ค.ที่ผ่านมาและมาในวันนี้เริ่มมีปลาขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นโผล่หัวขึ้นมาลอยตัวจะมีปลาสวาย ปลานิล ปลาจีน ปลายี่สกเทศ ลูกกุ้ง โดยมีชาวบ้านจำนวนมากได้มาทำการใช้อุปกรณ์ในการจับปลามารุมกันจับปลารอบบ่อน้ำแห่งนี้เป็นร้อยๆคน



ทางด้านนายเฉลิมพล มั่งคั่ง นายอำเภอลาดหลุมแก้ว ได้สั่งห้ามชาวบ้านจับปลาไปกินเนื่องจากกลัวว่าปลาที่ตายจำนวนมากน่าจะถูกสารพิษจากผู้น้ำสารพิษมาทิ้งในแหล่งน้ำแห่งนี้ ซึ่งได้เก็บตัวอย่างน้ำจำนวน 2 ขวดเพื่อส่งไปตรวจหาสาเหตุปลาตายในครั้งนี้ แต่ชาวบ้านไม่ฟังได้ช่วยกันจับปลาจำนวนมากที่ลอยตัวขึ้นมาจับใส่เกลือตากแดดแทน
