Within 40 minutes of take-off, the pilot of Flight 511, bound for Frankfurt, announced that birds had flown into and possibly damaged an engine. The plane turned around, dumped fuel and returned to land in Buenos Aires with emergency crews standing by. Passengers, who said they were unaware of the bird strike until the pilot's announcement, were taken to hotels and expected to attempt the 13-hour flight again on Tuesday.

Investigators were examining the wreckage to determine a possible cause for the fiery Sunday evening crash. The identities of those killed — the only people on board — were not immediately disclosed. A statement by the U.S. Embassy to local media said the plane was en route to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the first leg of a trip back to the United States. The twin-engine plane — apparently a vintage aircraft that had been modified — went down moments after taking off at Al Ain International Airport about 60 miles (100 kilometers) east of Abu Dhabi. A statement by the UAE's Civil Aviation Authority said it crashed the taxiway before catching fire. The plane was reported to be a McKinnon Turbo Goose G21G, which is a version of an earlier Grumman G21 aircraft converted from piston engines to turboprops. The Abu Dhabi-based newspaper The National reported the plane is owned by Triple S Aviation, a Texas-based aircraft service company with a branch office in Dubai. The company's website says it offers business aircraft, helicopters, and special use aircraft to the Middle East and South Asian markets.

    Event: Vehicle Accident
Location: Sri Lanka Western State Gampaha
    Number of Deads: 1 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 1 person(s)

Situation: Two Sri Lankan fighter jets collided in mid-air during an aerobatics training exercise on Tuesday, killing one of the pilots. The pilots from both of the Israeli-built Kfir aircraft ejected, but one of them died while being taken to hospital, a government official said. The crash occurred as the aircraft were training for 60th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lankan air force starting on Wednesday. Officials said President Mahinda Rajapakse, who was travelling in the area, visited the crash site. The Kfir plane was a key weapon in the Sri Lankan government's fight against separatist Tamil Tiger rebels who were crushed in May 2009.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: "As a helicopter was travelling in the area it declared a full emergency and it needed to land. "It made a full emergency landing at London City Airport and a crew member and a passenger both safely disembarked. "The runway has now reopened - it was closed for just over an hour - and flights are starting to get back to normal but there will be a bit of a knock-on effect so passengers are advised to contact their airlines." The spokeswoman said there was no further information at the moment on the nature of the emergency or whether the aircraft suffered any damage. She added that the Air Accidents Investigation Branch had been notified of the incident.

"Civil Aviation acting under international rules had to give permission for landing and refuelling." He said three aircraft landed at Larnaca, the main civil airport in Cyprus, two Mirage jet fighters and a C-17 transport plane. "As soon as they refuel they will depart," ended the brief statement. Airport authorities declined to comment on the incident and it was not clear where the aircraft were heading. State radio said they had landed around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) Tuesday. Qatar was the only Arab state to agree to participate in military operations in Libya, although the Arab League has backed the UN-mandated no-fly zone to stop strongman Moamer Kadhafi's forces harming civilians in a conflict with an insurgency. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani on Sunday said the aim was to "stop the bloodbath" and it was necessary for Arab states to take part. A French defence ministry spokesman said Qatar had decided to deploy four aircraft in the zone. Cyprus on the other hand has refused to be party to any military action against Libya.

The mid-air emergency took place when the A330-200 carrying 147 passengers and 11 crew was flying from Manila to Sydney. The new aircraft ran into trouble when the pilots noticed flames in the flight deck and passengers experienced a very strong burning smell coming from the cockpit. While pilots have reacted calmly, the Australian and International Airline Pilots Association has described the incident as serious. "It can be potentially serious. The pilots dealt with it in... a very good way, very professionally," Qantas A380 pilot and union president Barry Jackson said. "Obviously the priority in any situation with a fire is to get the aircraft on the ground."

Adding to the sense of alarm, the pilots were forced to use an extinguisher when the flames returned a second time. Passengers were kept informed of the situation over the public address system. "Fires are never good in an aircraft when it's airborne. Obviously it needs to be dealt with very quickly," Mr Jackson said. "If there is any fumes emitting from a fire, particularly an electrical fire, the pilots and the crew would be considering putting on oxygen masks and smoke goggles to deal with the fire. "Ensure that they're able to perform their jobs, their function, deal with the fire and obviously extinguish it. "Find the source if they can and isolate that source, and obviously as I say get the fire out as soon as possible so it doesn't become a bigger issue."

Qantas would not do an interview for the ABC's The World Today but in a statement the airline says passengers or crew did not experience any ill effects. It also thanked the pilots for their calm response to the incident. Mr Jackson says the investigation into the incident is still in its early days. "Our members are keen to find out the issue. Obviously that'll be dealt with in the proper process through the ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) and the details will be revealed once the investigation's complete," he said. "It sounds like a similar incident that happened with one of our Jetstar 330s recently, or a few years ago, when the window heater seems to have over-temped [sic] and sparked and sounds like that's been the cause of this." That overheating of the windscreen sparked an investigation by the ATSB in 2009. A similar Airbus, but operated by Jetstar, was en route from Japan to the Gold Coast when it caught fire and had to land in Guam.

The safety regulator then ordered inspections of all windshield electrical connections on the A330 fleet. Maintenance providers found no abnormalities. Qantas says it is aware of similar issues with Airbus aircraft flown by other operators. Mr Jackson says it is too early to say whether the incident is related to any decision by Qantas to do more outsourcing of its aircraft maintenance. But he is worried about what he says is a change in the safety culture at the airline. "We are concerned. Obviously we are currently concerned about pilots' futures and the outsourcing of what used to be traditionally Qantas flying," he said. "And that's certainly a concern as far as we are concerned and obviously the engineers have concerns about the offshoring of their job. "It's just a general trend towards the offshoring of our jobs and with that I believe becomes an impact on the operation of the airline, something that we are very, very concerned about long term. "We as pilots and certainly the engineers are the same. We're looking long term. We like to ensure that the airline is run to a tight ability and certainly safety is inherently associated with the name Qantas."

An American Airlines Boeing-737 en route from Miami and a United Airlines Airbus-320, flying in from Chicago, had 97 and 68 people, including crew, on their boards respectively. "The tower, which normally is staffed by one air-traffic controller from midnight to 6 a.m., did not respond to pilot requests for landing assistance or to phone calls from controllers elsewhere in the region, who also used a "shout line," which pipes into a loudspeaker in the tower, internal records show". Both planes landed safely at the airport as the pilots decided to take the matter in their own hands after unsuccessfully trying to get in touch with the air control tower. The investigation into the incident is underway, but there is still no version, what caused the silence from the tower. Shortly after the incident, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood ordered inspection of all airports in the country. He also ordered to have two, instead of a one, traffic controllers on duty at the control tower of the Reagan National Airport between midnight and 6 a.m.

The spokesperson said the plane remained in the air for an extra 90 minutes to burn off fuel, and then attempted a landing just before 3 p.m. The brakes engaged at the last minute, and the aircraft landed safely. The plane, reportedly a Challenger air ambulance belonging to the government of Quebec, was carrying five passengers. None of them were injured.

A police unit was dispatched to the scene and the Swedish Accident Investigation Board (Statens haverikommission - SHK) has been notified. The Sacramento Bee writes "Southwest Airlines Flight 812 made a rapid descent to 11,000 feet after the incident occurred and later landed safely at Yuma Marine Corps Air Station/International Airport at 4:07 p.m. (7:07 p.m. ET), FAA spokesman Ian Gregor wrote in an email." Southwest issued a statement shortly after 9:30 p.m. ET, saying: Southwest Airlines Flight 812, the scheduled 3:25 pm departure from Phoenix to Sacramento today, diverted to Yuma, Ariz due to loss of pressurization in the cabin. Upon safely landing in Yuma, the flight crew discovered a hole in the top of the aircraft. There are no reported Customer injuries.

One of the Flight Attendants, however, received a minor injury upon descent. Sacramento's KCRA TV reports that "the plane descended 16,000 feet in a minute, according to the flight-tracking website called flightaware.com." There were 118 people on the flight, which had taken off from Phoenix en route to Sacramento. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-700, according to flightaware.com. The FAA's Gregor tells The Associated Press that the cause of the decompression wasn't known as of 10 p.m. ET Saturday. As for the "hole," several passengers described what they saw to the various media sources reporting on the incident. "You can see daylight through it," a passenger identified as Brenda Reese is quoted as saying to KCRA by cellphone. "It's at the top of the plane, right up above where you store your luggage," Reese added to AP in a telephone interview. "The panel's not completely off. It's like ripped down, but you can see completely outside." AP writes "Reese said there was 'no real panic' among the passengers, who applauded the pilot after he emerged from the cockpit following the emergency landing."

Another passenger on the flight -- identified only as "Cindy" -- describes the scene to Sacramento's CBS 13. "They had just taken drink orders when I heard a huge sound and oxygen masks came down and we started making a rapid decent. They said we'd be making an emergency landing," CBS 13 quotes the woman as saying. "There was a hold (sic) in the fuselage about three feet long. You could see the insulation and the wiring. You could see a tear the length of one of the ceiling panels." "An FAA inspector is en route to investigate," CNN reports on its website. Southwest says in its release that it "will work with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) as they investigate this event."

    Event: Vehicle Accident
Location: Germany Rhineland-Palatinate Spangdahlem Air Base Trier Number of Injured: 1 person(s)

    Situation:

An American attack jet crashed in Germany’s western Eifel region on Friday near Laufeld. The pilot was able to eject and has been taken to a nearby hospital. The slow-moving A-10 Thunderbolt II, which is used for close air support, was not carrying missiles, according to a police spokesman in Trier. But the plane, commonly known by its “Warthog” moniker, did have 1,100 rounds of live ammunition for its cannon on board. The fire brigade, the police and a rescue helicopter all rushed to the crash site, which was only 300 metres from the village of Laufeld. “We narrowly avoided a catastrophe,” said Karl-Josef Junk, the mayor of the 500-person hamlet. A spokeswoman for the US airbase Spangdahlem said the jet was stationed there and had been on a routine training flight when it suddenly crashed for still unknown reasons around 4 pm.

    Event: Vehicle Incident
Location: USA State of Ohio Dayton airport Dayton Number of Injured: 8 person(s)

    Situation:

An American Airlines plane had to be diverted today after four passengers fainted and two flight attendants complained of feeling extremely dizzy. The flight made an emergency landing at Dayton, Ohio, after a suspected problem with the plane's air conditioning system. Passengers may have suffered 'aerotoxic syndrome' caused by breathing in contaminated air. Complaints about the air quality on the plane began when it had reached 28,000 ft. Aside from those who fainted, several others reported feeling sick and being on the verge of vomiting. One passenger reportedly had an asthma attack. Christina Saull, a passenger from Washington, D.C., told the Dayton Daily News that before the plane took off there was an announcement made about problems with the air and cabin pressurization system. Saull, who was flying with her husband, said the plane took off only after maintenance personal came onboard and checked out the cockpit. Then, passengers started dropping. 'Halfway through the flight, the woman in the row behind us … we thought she had a seizure,' Saull told the Daily News. Really she and the woman next to her had passed out. Then passengers ten rows up complained of fumes and feeling light-headed.

Minutes later, the oxygen masks dropped. The plane landed safely at around 8.20am. Within half an hour the 126 passengers and six crew had left the aircraft. At least two passengers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their condition has yet to be announced. Flight 547 had been on its way to Chicago's O'Hare Airport from Washington DC's Reagan National Airport. American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle says the pilot dropped the oxygen masks for everyone as soon as the dizziness was reported. He said that the airline was investigating the cause, adding that passengers would not be completing their journey to Chicago on the same plane. Terrence Slaybaugh, the director of Dayton International Airport, said the pilot alerted the airport that some passengers were complaining about air quality. He said: 'Right now they don’t know if they have a mechanical problem or not, so as a precaution, they landed the aircraft.' Medics from three towns were sent to the airport. Passengers were kept in the American Airlines holding area at the airport, while the airline looked to make alternative arrangements. That, Mr Slaybaugh said, presented a major challenge because it's a Friday and flights are full.

Kennedy International Airport, where it landed safely. There is no word yet on what caused the decrease in cabin pressure or whether any injuries were sustained. On Friday, another American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing when a number of passengers and crew reported feeling ill and four passengers later fainted. The flight from Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., was on its way to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport when the captain -- after learning of the reported illnesses -- lowered the plane's oxygen masks as a precaution during the plane's emergency descent into Dayton, Ohio. The airline was trying to determine whether a loss in cabin pressure was to blame. Also on Friday, a Southwest Airlines jet made an emergency landing after the roof of the aircraft tore open in mid-air. Fatigue cracks were discovered near the point of the break.
